Dear Members
You will have heard the news that there is a new Topper boat, as a class association, ITCA (IRL) recognise that the new boat represents the future of Topper sailing and we intend to work closely with Ian Proctor Designs and the other ITCA Associations on the roadmap for the new boats full integration into the class. To this end, we will all be working together to understand the performance of the new polyethylene boat relative to the International Topper (existing polypropylene Topper), under various conditions, and then together devising a strategy for its integration.
Whilst there are some new boats on order for individual IRL buyers, it is not clear exactly when and how many will arrive, as the final elements of production and testing are still being established.
ITCA (IRL) feel it is important to be clear regarding our up and coming events, the next one being the Northern Championships on the 29-30 April in Carrickfergus. We would like to emphasise the new boats and their lucky sailors are very welcome and encouraged to take part in the regatta, they will be integrated into the same starts (5.3 and 4.2) and will sail alongside the International Toppers. However, official results, prizes, and Championship honours will only be given to sailors of the International Topper (existing polypropylene boat) at this early stage in the integration process. Should the numbers of new boats justify, then consideration will be given to separate trophies. The published Northern Championship NOR will be amended, and the upcoming SIs will reflect this intention.
This situation will continue to be monitored as we move through the season and more information is available regarding the new boat’s integration. It is hoped that Topper International Limited, Ian Proctor Designs, and ITCA (World) will have progressed sufficiently to allow the full integration of the new boat ahead of the Irish Nationals, the World Championships, and the GBR Nationals. As an association, we will where possible assist them in achieving this aim.
